Entertainer: Singer, Songwriter, Author, Variety Show
Entertainer Dennis Weaver was known in the industry as a “triple threat” (stage, screen, and television). Dennis Weaver was not only an award-winning actor, but he could sing and dance as well. He wrote 96 songs and released six country music albums.
The Weaver’s family-oriented comedy/variety stage show featured Dennis’s wife Gerry and singer-composer son, Rusty. The Weavers toured California, Arizona, Colorado and other states with their show and also performed at “The Big Barn,” in Ridgway (where they made their home in later years). Dennis and Gerry often danced there, much to the delight of their friends and neighbors in Ouray County and nearby Telluride.
In his one-man Shakespearean show performed at various colleges in California, Colorado, Tennessee, Missouri, he played 19 different characters. Dennis appeared in various musical venues including Perry Como, Dean Martin, and the Sonny and Cher shows.
Dennis also directed several television episodes and is published as a poet and author. In 2001, he published his autobiography, “All the World’s a Stage.”
As the successor to John Wayne, Dennis was chosen by James Montgomery to be spokesman for Great Western Bank, a position he held for 14 years. He also hosted Starz Entertainment’s “Westerns” channel for nine years. His final role was in in “ Wildfire” for ABC Family Entertainment.
Dennis’s entertainment legacy continues. Son Rick was line producer of Magnum PI for seven years and appeared in three episodes. Robby appeared in three series, co-staring in “Stone” with Dennis and worked as post production producer for Stars Encore. Rusty appeared in several episodes of “Gentle Ben” and one of of “Magnum PI” with Dennis, and today is singer/songwriter, musical performer. Grandsons Travis and Jess are also in the entertainment industry.
